Spirit of the Hills

Spirit of the Hills

Birds everywhere!

Break time (aka deciding what to do next) in the yurt.

Mr. Bill... best wolf-hybrid around.

For those of you not on my Instagram feed, I've been volunteering at a wondrous and magical place called Spirit of the Hills Wildlife Sanctuary. I can say that it is probably the best therapy I've had in years. I get to take care of animals and spend time after chores playing and loving on them too. There are so many people that I've met and animals that give me strength and love. I hope to share more on the different animals and their stories here in the blog. Let me know what you think!

Sleepy Sleep

I admit it. I am not a good sleeper. Most of the time my mind just keeps going and going and pretty much outruns the sandman. Lately I've seen all sorts of articles reminding people how important sleep is. "Sleep gives you a radiant complexion." "Lack of sleep makes you fat!" and so on...

To say the least I've tried everything out there to help me sleep. So here are a few tips I've received and tried over the years that has helped me get better sleep.

1. Wear socks to bed. I know it sounds odd and some people just can't have socks on in bed. But I find that if my feet are cold the rest of me feels cold. I have several pairs of snuggly sleep socks that are fuzzy, comforting and sweet. It always feels good to put them on.

2. Keep your bedroom cool. Our bodies temp drops during sleep. So keeping the room cool helps get to the body's sleepy temp faster. But don't keep it too cold. We're not hibernating bears; we're human! I find around 70 to 73 degrees F works best. Too much colder and you spend more time shivering than sleeping.

3. Remove the clock from your view. How many times have you gone to bed, looked at the clock, only to spend the rest of your night going back and forth between counting sheep and calculating how much sleep you would get if you fell asleep right then? It's like going on a run on a rainy day and constantly thinking about how much more you have to trudge through to get to the end. It's maddening!

4. Get a snuggle partner. Maybe it's a girl thing, but feeling lonely can keep you awake. A University of Chicago study found that if you feel lonely you are more apt to wake up several times during the night. I didn't get my puppy Fred as a snuggle buddy, but when he isn't there with me, I do realize I don't sleep as well. Another great thing about having a fuzzy four legged friend.

5. Establish a bedtime routine. This is the last I'll bug you with today. I do know from years of shift work that a routine helps tell your body and mind that you are preparing to sleep. Keep your routine based on actions. Everyone seems to have busy lives that aren't always conducive to going to bed at the same time every night (although that is the ideal addition to bedtime routine).  If you work on a shift that rotates, think of making your routine about getting a shower, then pj's and fluffy socks, brushing your hair and teeth, and finally reading something for 30 minutes. (Note about the reading: A thrilling novel isn't always best for this, because you want to sleep, not be kept awake wanting to read what happens next.) It is like a countdown to snoozeville.

So, I hope some of these help. As the headline will tell you, sleep and quality sleep is vital. Sleep tight!

Random Crazy Facts

I know I may never get into Mensa, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying my nerdiness. I love to go into a store and see Mental Floss on the shelf. I have random issues laying about my house. I picked one up today and was reading the old column 'Know-It-All' by A.J. Jacobs who wrote a book by the same name. He spent a year reading all 32 volumes of the Encyclopedia Britannica. (For those too young to remember that, it was what was standard in research prior to Wikipedia.)

ANYWAY... Mr Jacobs would write a column in the magazine with random knowledge from one letter or volume. I was reading on Q. Here is a few things I read that I wanted to share with you...

Qa - An ancient Babylonian unit of liquid measurement. It might just be the best SCRABBLE word in the encyclopedia, but it's also incredibly helpful when measuring out mead.

Quark - The most literary subatomic particle in the universe. The word actually comes from the crazy talk passage in James Joyce's famously impenetrable novel, Finnegans Wake. ("Three quarks for Muster Mark! / Sure he hasn't got too much of a bark.") In the passage, "quark" means something along the lines of cawing like a bird. The physicist who named it was a Joyce fan - and a total show-off.

Quill - Using a feather as a pen seems like a simple enough idea. It's not. To make a good quill pen, you need to pluck the second or third feather on the outer wing. Pluck only from a living bird, and do it during their new growth period in the spring. The left wing is better for right-handed writers, and the right wing is better for lefties. Swan quills are good and goose quills will do, but crow quills - crow quills are where it's at.

Lesson done for the day. What random facts did you learn today?

Instagram Fun

There should be an Instagram Anonymous. "Hi, I am Missy and I'm an Instagram addict." I love that I can post to Flicker, Facebook and Twitter as I post to Instagram. So easy and the editing is super easy.

I thought I'd share some fun photos I've Instagram'ed. (New phrase I'm coining, get it???) See how funny sodas and a little photo editing can make your day? You should try it!

Weekend Adventure - Crow Peak

Labor Day for most is a day of BBQs and picnics. However, when you have an active preteen boy in the house you look for something a little more active to do. Or at least I look for something more active to do.

Since returning to the Black Hills two weeks ago, the outdoor fun has been calling me out to enjoy it. All the hiking and fresh air is seriously addictive. It brings so many ideas to the surface. When it comes to beauty, science has nothing on nature.

So my dad and I took kiddo and a buddy up to Crow Peak. It was a tough hike for someone not used to elevation. But the views were worth it. I was able to oversee the whole town of Spearfish. I can't think of a better Labor Day.

Favorite Places - The Drive Home

Now that I am no longer in the Army I will miss one of the best parts of my day, the drive home. I love driving by all the drop zones and seeing the sun set as the Airborne drop out of planes. It is really stunning. There is no brochure or Army video that can truly show the beauty of watching an evening jump. It was also a time to reflect on my day and wind down so that when I made it home. The drive took about 40 minutes. By the end, I was able to appreciate and enjoy my life at home without bringing work stress with me. I will truly miss my drive home.

Favorite Places - Barnes & Noble

I'm a Nerd. I admit it and say it with pride.  My bed is usually covered in books and magazines I am reading. Not to mention all my favorite blogs are usually open in different windows on my computer. I am a certifiable book crazy nerd. Needless to say I love Barnes and Noble.

I have to say I love B&N for many reasons. One, there is a Starbucks in them. Two, I can get a coffee and flip through magazines all I want for free. It is seriously one of my favorite ways to waste away an afternoon. I could get lost in all sorts of bookshops and libraries, but at my B&N I have a little spot in the corner I like to call my own. I can't wait to go again this week.

I always hope everyone out there has a spot they love. Just like I do at my B&N.
